How it works: The total/HDL ratio = total cholesterol ÷ HDL. As a rough guide, under 3.5 is considered lower risk, 3.5–5 average, and over 5 higher risk. Non-HDL (total − HDL) captures all the artery-clogging fractions in one number. Real cardiovascular risk also depends on blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, age and family history — only a clinician who knows your full picture can assess it.
