Flooring is sold by the box but laid by the tile, and cuts eat into both. Enter the room size and tile size to get the honest shopping list: tiles for the area, a wastage allowance for cuts and breakage, whole boxes to buy, and the tile budget.

How it works

Room area = length × width. One tile covers (tile length × tile width) ÷ 144 square feet when tile sizes are in inches. Tiles = room area ÷ tile area, rounded up, then increased by your wastage percentage — 10% suits straight layouts; diagonal patterns need 15% or more. Boxes = tiles ÷ tiles per box, rounded up, because shops sell whole boxes. Labour, skirting and adhesive/grout are extra.
