How it works: base^exponent multiplies the base by itself exponent times; a negative exponent flips it into a fraction (2⁻³ = 1/8 = 0.125) and a fractional exponent is a root (9^0.5 = √9 = 3). Logarithms answer the reverse question — ‘to what power must I raise 10 to get this number?’ — with log₁₀ and natural log (ln) both shown when the base is positive.
